A lamp, in my mind, has five non-negotiable elements. The cord, the wires, the light socket, the bulb, and the switch. Power has to come from somewhere, travel across the lamp to the socket, successfully energize a bulb capable of illuminating some amount of space, and you’ve got to make a way to turn it off. If you leave one of those components out, all you get is a sculpture of a lamp, or an apparatus for testing the longevity of lightbulbs. I know this, obviously, but I still tend towards a “hope for the best” approach when I’m selecting and arranging parts. Mostly it works out, sometimes I forget about the switch. The bit of the switch you can see and use is normally less than a third of the size of the parts that actually do the switching. That means it can’t just go anywhere that seems clever… Like I said though, mostly it works out.
