The great thing about art is that there are no limits on scale. Crankshafts, a pinion gear, and brake pad shoes are not precluded from being elements in a sun-stretching blossom. The trick is to weave the perception of lightness into the weight of reality. Although a good angle grinder also goes a long way. The stem of this flower is a chopped up crescent wrench that supports a pinion gear from a jeep rear-end. 15 cap-head bolts stretch out from the gear, spiraling in towards an old gas pump dial that rotates around a spark plug. I cut and ground a section from a jeep crankshaft to serve as the base, and attached a pair of brake shoes from an old Dodge Power Wagon to serve as leaves.
