Studio Bench

Made from the same Elm log as my Jeep Frame Bench. I took a more airy, although equally heavy, approach for this bench.  I used several chair back braces to cradle the wood, and then set three separate driveshafts as the legs.  The feet are magnesium aircraft rims that are fixed to the legs with pipe flanges welded to the driveshaft U-joints, so they can pivot slightly to accommodate uneven surfaces.  To keep the legs from shifting, I built a triangular brace from a steel bar and flat stock and bolted it to three aircraft pipe fittings.  For the armrests, I cut two pieces of Texas Pecan, and inlayed some perforated aluminum sheet.  The backrest is four sections of cast iron BBQ grill grate that I welded together and wrapped with about a hundred feet of cotton rope.  I burned in a ‘blowing reeds’ pattern and then set a microphone routing block to the front of the seat, and finished all the wood in several coats of pour on bar-top finish.  The whole project took around 4 months to finish out, but I think all in all it was time well spent.
