Because most of my projects develop piece by piece, things tend to change and ideas that seem great at first, don’t always work out. The body of this little penguin is actually the ball from a truck hitch that I found in the street, and initially I had planned to capture a yellow turn-signal bulb in the socket to add a little color to the stomach. Everything was looking pretty cool until I started cleaning up the welds around the lightbulb and it’s glass shattered. Suddenly my little penguin had a gaping hole in his stomach with a bunch of mangled filament wires sticking out; not exactly the look I was going for. To cap it off, the semi-spherical piece holding the light in would have to be cut up to get the broken bulb out, and it was the only piece I had like that. Sometimes that’s how it goes when you work with scavenged parts, and so a bolt head took the place of the lightbulb and I learned to be a lot more careful around hot glass.
