This lamp was intended as a proof-of-concept for a friend that was trying to pitch a very large hanging dinning room light fixture. The idea was to have a massive cedar beam, inlaid with metallic blue accents that would have blue electrical insulators projecting from the beam via black gas pipe and hung at varying lengths over the table. He asked if I could provide some pipe with an insulator attached so he could give the customer a visual. In my experience, it’s always good to have a back up plan. So instead I worked up this little lamp, thinking that if his customer didn’t bite, at least I would have a lamp. Lord knows I don’t have enough of those sitting around. I’ll let you guess how all that worked out, and offer for your illuminating enjoyment an uncluttered reminder of the possibilities that sometimes pass us by. The base is wedge of Texas Cedar inlaid with blue pigment, the armature is black gas pipe and fittings, the shroud is a Hemingray #42 electrical insulator with perforated aluminum sheet, the switch is a gear from a Kitchenaid stand mixer set in a brass pocket door handle. A little lamp that is not what could have been, but what is instead. Nice and bright.
