Michelangelo is quoted as saying, “I saw the angel in the marble, and carved until I set him free.” I wish I could say that I follow a similar process, but most times my art takes more of a “connect the dots” path. I plunge ahead for a while until I start to see a theme develop, and then add elements to shade in character. In the case of this lamp, most of the structure was complete before I saw the direction I wanted to go with it. While looking at the frame that holds the bottle in place, I was reminded of WWII aircraft cockpits, and so I started thinking of ways to encourage that idea. Rather than try to make an “airplane lamp,” I only tried to incorporate details that lent themselves towards that concept. While the lamp certainly isn’t a replica of the TBM-1C aircraft that I used for inspiration, hopefully there are enough parallels to warrant the comparison.
