How heavy is too heavy for a desk lamp? At almost thirty pounds, this one has got to be close. Originating with an antique bottle, my next thought was to suspend it between two electrical insulators that I could set the light sockets into. From there I used a set of piston rods from an old jeep engine and fixed them in-place on that engine’s valve shaft. From there it only made sense to bolt the shaft back onto part of the engine head that I had previously cut into thirds, that’s when things really got heavy. This cast iron head is no joke, but I’ll never have to worry about this lamp tipping over. I flipped the valves and springs to protrude from the top of the head, then modified a keg tap to function as the power switch. Holding tight to the engine theme, I modified some spark plugs to provide the power connection for the light assembly and screwed them into place. I finished it off by adding heavy gauge copper wire around the piston rods, some copper pipe from the back of the switch to the head, and some espresso machine shower screens to block off the intake channel.
