Iron Airship

I generally have two starting points for my art: I have a “type” of thing in mind (a desk lamp for example) and then search through the parts I have to give shape to that function or, I begin by picking up an object and thinking to myself “this looks like…” and then build from there. When my dad gave me a box of metal gas tanks, I followed that second approach. Along with processes, my art ends up with one of two aspects: Form in support of function or, Form for its own sake. In the case of form-and-function there has to be a balance, you can’t overwhelm one with the other or you end up with something that’s boring, or a 30lb desk lamp… Art for art’s sake on the other hand means that nothing is off the table. “Could I use this old pool ball and hold it in place with a spoon?” for instance, or “What if I made engines from these Vitamix blades/piano tuning pegs/brass air-compressor inserts?” Is there any practicality to any of this? Nope. Well, I guess maybe. It is awful fun to look at.
