Most of the materials I work with are acquired either as leftovers from mechanical repairs or projects or are found in my day to day travels. On occasion things just fall into my lap, or in this case, they fall in my yard. The cycle of time brought about the demise of several trees in our yard, and some of the remains were too beautifully full of potential to dispose of. When we had to have a large Elm cut down, I saved several sections that I thought could become a set of benches. When I helped a friend cut up his old Jeep frame, I realized I had found the “frame” for one of the benches. I added limbs that I’d saved from a fallen Crepe Myrtle for the arms and a scrap piece of Cedar from a friend for the backrest. Worn-out bicycle sprocket gears provide the final accents to the fronts of the arms.
