The Perfection

We like tequila, and if you live in Central Texas, the best tequila around is made by Abandanado. Not only is it delicious, but it comes in these beautiful glass bottles that are just the right size for pendent lamps… Friends of ours were redoing their kitchen and asked if I would make them a hanging light fixture that incorporated these bottles, and I jumped at the chance. After safely disposing of the tequila I started looking around the shop for something interesting that I could use as the base and came across a heating element from an industrial space heater. Embossed on the body was the word ‘Perfection’ and I knew I had my starting point. Because the heater had been fed by natural gas, I was able to use gas pipe with brass fittings for the armature; and then used a modern cloth-wrapped wire to suspend the pendants. Because the heater was only about three inches wide, I needed a cover-pate to hide the electrical box. More digging around and I settled on a worn out circular saw blade. Our friends wanted to retain some of the late-70’s elements in their kitchen, all of which is a very… distinct shade of avocado green, and so to tie the light fixture in with the kitchen I painted the base the same color. Cutting the bottles turned out to be the most involved part of the project, as the glass was exceedingly thick and filled with bubbles from the blowing process. After the bottles were cut, I decided that they needed some definition, so I painted the lower rims with a special acrylic silver impregnated paint. This gave an extra point of reflection in the bottles and lends a sense of completion to the cut glass.
